Nucleus basalis prosencephali, a substrate of apomorphine-induced pecking in pigeons.

چکیده
Microinjections of the dopamine agonist apomorphine into the nucleus basalis prosencephali of pigeons elicit stereotyped pecking behaviour. Injections of 6-hydroxydopamine, a toxic dopamine antagonist, into the same nucleus impair stereotyped pecking induced by systemic apomorphine administration, but do not interfere with pecking in the normal feeding context.

Frontal forebrain lesions: effects on the foraging and apomorphine pecking of pigeons.
The role of the nucleus basalis prosencephali (Bas), a frontal forebrain structure peculiar to birds, in the control of forage pecking and apomorphine-induced pecking was investigated. In a quasi-natural grit-grain selection task bilateral coagulations of the Bas and the associated neostratum frontolaterale (Nfl) caused a marked fall in grain per peck uptake and a simultaneous increase in grit ...
متن کاملGrasping in the pigeon: control through sound and vibration feedback mediated by the nucleus basalis.
Pigeons were trained to detect auditory and vibratory stimuli in two separate experiments using an instrumental conditioning procedure. The discriminative stimuli became effective as the subjects grasped a probe with the beak. The pigeons learned to suppress responding upon this grasp-contingent stimulation. Bilateral lesions of the nucleus basalis prosencephali (Bas), known to be involved in t...
متن کاملPecking and Respiration Rhythms of Pigeons
The production and coordination of rhythmic activities in birds is seldom investigated. Here we describe the pecking and breathing rhythms of pigeons under different conditions. When feeding from a heap of small grains, hungry pigeons pecked at regular intervals of about 0.3 s. The pecking rhythm was slightly slo,":,er in the afternoon. The pecking rhythm induced by the dopaminergic drug apomor...
متن کاملBehavioural consequences of nucleus accumbens dopaminergic stimulation and glutamatergic blocking in pigeons.
Upon systemic administration of apomorphine, a potent dopamine agonist, pigeons show a bout of pecking behaviour. When the drug is repeatedly administered a sensitization takes place that is associated with pronounced discrimination learning. Here we show that intra-cerebral injections of apomorphine in the periphery of the nucleus accumbens of pigeons also elicit pecking. We additionally show ...
متن کاملThe effect of dextromethorphan on apomorphine-induced pecking behavior in chick
Dextromethorphan is an NMDA receptor antagonist in the glutamatergic system. Currently, there are some reports showing that the glutamatergic NMDA receptor mechanism stimulates dopamine release from several brain regions. This effect may in part modulate the stereotyped behaviors of dopaminergic system. The purpose of the present study was to determine the interaction between the blockade of NM...
